Love Thy Neighbor, brought to you by the Racial Justice and Healing CommitteeNew terms relating to racial justice have entered our lexicon in recent years; many of which are widely misunderstood. One of these terms is “White Privilege”, which often elicits defensiveness, but it is not about the benefits and perks of being white, rather about the absence of impediments and barriers. White privilege does not mean that white people are bad, that they do not work hard to achieve success, or that they do not experience hardship. It means that white people have not been subjected to the additional barrier of discrimination based on skin color. The term has been around for years but only became widely known with increased antiracism efforts. White privilege encompasses both obvious and subtle advantages that white people may not recognize they have, including things like presumed greater social status, being able to move about freely without encountering suspicion, assuming that one’s experiences are the norm and tagging “others” for their differences, or being used to not being defined or described by one’s race - things that often go completely unnoticed. Perhaps rather than thinking about white privilege in terms of what you have received or how you gained it, focus on what you did not have to go through to get it. Dear Friends,This weekend at Mass, we hear the Gospel passage of the Beatitudes found in Matthew 5:1-12a. One of my favorite beatitudes is “Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.”One day in seminary, I was taught that the word “purity” in Matthew 5 is better translated as “without mixture” according to the semitic mindset. The pure of heart ones, therefore, are those who live “single-heartedly” and, that is, without mixture of motives and intentions in their hearts.Sometimes, it so happens that someone says one thing, while you can tell their heart is somewhere else; God placed in us the capacity to perceive duplicity in ours or someone else’s words and actions. The Lord uses such awareness on our part, however, to call us to “purity of heart” so that “all may be one” (cf. John 17:21) as was his wish for all those who would come to believe in him.God is one and simple. Therefore, those who live simply and singleheartedly can see God and find him in all things and people.The Lord Jesus taught us a way to purify our motives and intentions and thus grow in purity of heart when He said, “let your ‘yes’ mean ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ mean ‘no’” (cf. Many of you know of the sister parish relationship we have had since 1989 with a parish in Chiapas, Mexico, but did you know the name of the parish is San Ildefonso? It is located in the town of Tenejapa in Chiapas, a state in southern Mexico and serves about 90 communities in the surrounding hillsides. The parish namesake, Saint Ildefonso (or more familiarly Alfonso), was born in 607 to a prominent Visigoth family, became a monk, was elected (a different process than today) the Bishop of Toledo, and died on January 23, 667, which is now celebrated as his feast day. It is said that Mary appeared to him and presented him with a vestment in honor of his zeal for her; his writings on the purity of Mary may have led to him being credited (by some) as the source of referring to Mary as “Virgin,” a uniquely Spanish practice of the day. Iberian missionaries spread his story worldwide especially to areas of New Mexico, Mexico and the Philippines. A painting of Ildefonso by the famed El Greco resides near Toledo, Spain.
